A Mini City Guide To Lima, Peru

07:00:00

Lima, the capital city of Peru, is typically the gateway into the country to see the main sights of Cusco and Machu Picchu. It might not be as picturesque as other Peruvian cities such as Arequipa, but if you've flown directly into Lima then the city is definitely worth at least one day of exploring.

Located alongside the coast, Lima is a vast city that's home to roughly a third of Peru's total population. It's well known for its good food, bustling city centre, and for being one of the driest cities in the world!

How to get around:
Lima is a fairly big city so although it's possible to walk everywhere I personally wouldn't recommend it. There is also limited public transport with no full Metro system yet, so I would recommend booking a city tour to make the most of your time. Viator has lots of options ranging from sightseeing bus companies, to group bike tours.

Where to stay:
The best area for tourists to stay is in a district called Miraflores near the coast. It's known to be an incredibly safe area of Lima and has plenty of hotels, cafes and restaurants to choose from. Hotel Santa Cruz is a good 3 star hotel option with basic, clean rooms and breakfast is included.

What to see:

  • Plaza De Armas - Also known as Plaza Mayor, this is the main central square in Lima. It's located in the historic part of the city.
  • La Catedral de Lima - This impressive cathedral can be found in the main square. Although it was built in 1538, it's been restored and rebuilt several times over the centuries due to numerous earthquakes that have impacted the city.
  • Santo Domingo Church and Convent -  Only a few minutes walk away from the main square.
  • Huaca Pucllana - A pre-Inca temple. Located in the Miraflores district - today it's one of Lima's most popular archaeological sites.
  • Miraflores boardwalk & Park of Love - Along the coast, this is a lovely place in Lima to go for a walk. The 'Park of Love' is a landscaped garden with a huge sculpture in the centre.
